It’s been a minute since Hannah Montana, the clean-living, fun-loving teen made famous by Miley Cyrus and adored by girls across the globe came to an inevitable end.
Since then we’ve had Bangerz, bad behaviour, broken marriages and one very bawdy performance with Robin Thicke at the MTV Music Awards as the singer and actress endeavoured to shed her wholesome Disney image in favour of something a little more risque.
It hasn’t been the easiest of transitions for Cyrus, whose reckless journey through adolescence and early adulthood has been relentlessly studied, scrutinised and occasionally criticised.
But time has a habit of going full circle, and as she settles into her thirties the Tennessee born star, now 31, has adjusted to a more sedentary way of life – albeit one that includes working out in designer heels.
Speaking to W Magazine Volume 3. The Pop Issue, she explained: ‘My lifestyle is extremely clean. Sobriety is a big part of it. My mantra is, like any athlete, “Practice how you perform.” So that’s why I practice in my heels.

‘The gym looks really tough, but then I’ve got my ivory Gucci slingbacks because they remind me of Marilyn Monroe. I train in heels, mostly. I’m interested in feminising the workout space, because so much of the workout equipment is ugly.’
Cyrus is currently enjoying a career renaissance of sorts – her last studio album Endless Summer Vacation was the 19th best-selling album on the planet, debuting at number one in ten countries.
Lead single Flowers was also a hit, winning the star multiple awards – among them a Brit for Best International Song, and a Grammy – her first – for Song of the Year.
Since then she’s teamed up with Beyoncé for a surprise collaboration on the R&B legend’s country and western infused new album, Cowboy Carter.
The song in question, II Most Wanted, proved to be one of its highlights, and Cyrus admits she wrote the music two years before it ended up on Carter.
‘My mom would always go, “I love that song so much.” So when Beyoncé reached out to me about music, I thought of it right away because it really encompasses our relationship,’ she explained.
‘I told her, “We don’t have to get country; we are country. We’ve been country.” I said, “You know, between you being from Texas and me being from Tennessee, so much of us is going to be in this song.” Getting to write a song, not just sing, for Beyoncé was a dream come true.’
The collaboration has cemented an already close relationship with the enigmatic Beyoncé, who Cyrus counts as a friend.
