In a recent interview, music producer and Selena Gomez’s boyfriend, Benny Blanco, opened up about his astonishment at winning a BMI Award. Blanco, known for his unique approach to music production, shared his thoughts on the honor and the creative journey that led him there.
Reflecting on the accolade, Blanco admitted feeling like an unworthy recipient compared to past winners. “I looked at all the other people who’ve gotten it and I feel like they just made a mistake by giving it to me,” he confessed. Despite his humility, he acknowledged the significance of the recognition, saying, “It’s such an honor. I pinch myself every day.”
Blanco’s approach to music is deeply personal and authentic. “I just try to make songs about what I’m feeling and hope someone else is feeling the same way,” he explained. He aspires for his music to resonate with listeners, providing comfort or joy during different moments in their lives. “If I can help them in a way and they can listen to the song and it can get them through a good time or a bad time, that’s what it’s all about.”
The producer emphasized the importance of originality in the music industry. “Just try to be different. Don’t do what everyone else is doing,” he advised. Blanco believes it’s better to take risks and create unique, even if imperfect, music rather than produce something mediocre that blends in with everything else. “It’s better to mess up and make terrible music but have it be different than just make something that’s okay and the same as everything else.”
Despite his success, Blanco remains grateful and enthusiastic about his career. “I’m just happy to be in the game,” he said, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to work with talented artists and create music that reaches a wide audience. “I just pray to God people keep recording songs of mine, and I get to work with great artists.”
Blanco also marveled at the accessibility and rapid pace of the modern music industry. “Every day, I’m listening to a new person because the point of access is so much easier,” he noted. He finds it incredible that a song created in someone’s bedroom can become a global hit overnight. “It’s the coolest thing, and it’s amazing.”
