Ariana Grande has been hard at work bringing Galinda/ Glinda the Good Witch to the big screen in the film adaptation of Wicked. But while she might have been focused on singing songs from the famed Broadway musical, she still managed to find time to record music of her own.
On Sunday, the Grammy-award-winning musician announced that a new single is coming. Grande posted a blurry close-up shot of her face, with bold red lipstick on Instagram to announce her single, “yes, and?” coming January 12.
The artist’s official sweetener Instagram page — which was the title of her fourth studio album released in 2018 — also saw changes to its profile photo along with nine image posts that piece together the blurry close-up. The new profile pic shows Grande’s tattooed hand, but blurry. Is that this album’s theme? Blur?
Grande also shared a pre-save link for the new single.
Over the last several weeks, Ariana Grande has been teasing on social media that she’s in the studio, working hard on her music. At the beginning of December, Grande shared a carousel of photos and videos of her sitting at a computer in the studio, wearing her long blonde ponytail, piecing her music together. She kept the videos muted, of course.
Multiple celebrities and fans wrote in the comments how excited they were for her new era of music. SZA wrote, “Oh this bout to eat.” Billie Eilish wrote, “UN MUTE PLS.” While Selena Gomez commented, “FINALLY.”
Before announcing the title of her forthcoming single, Grande was photographed walking around New York City wearing an oversized black crewneck with the single’s title, “yes, and?” Celebrity photographer Miles Diggs, AKA Diggzy, posted the pics to Instagram with the caption “With your chest” and #ag7, and fans immediately put their detective hats on wondering if “yes, and?” is the title of a song or the album itself. It’s not the first time Grande has worn her merch to signal a new album coming; the artist wore sweetener-theme clothes ahead of that album.
The last album Grande released was Positions in October 2020. Shortly after its release, Grande landed the role of Glinda/ Galinda in the highly-anticipated film Wicked. The screen adaptation will be released in two parts: the first in 2024 and the second in 2025.
