A group of 8 lions tried every way to capture the scimitar-horned oryx, but in the end they had to give up.
The antelope is alone, while the lion pride has up to 8 cubs. This is an extremely attractive opportunity for the lions, it is not easy for them to ignore this rare opportunity. However, when the whole herd of lions surrounded the antelope, no lion could make a decisive attack.
The reason lies in the long, sharp horns that the scimitar-horned antelope possesses. After trying everything but still unable to do anything to the scimitar-horned oryx, the lions sadly gave up and left the antelope leisurely in their territory.
Both males and females of the scimitar-horned oryx possess long, straight horns, but the female oryx’s horns are more slender. These horns can be 1 – 1.2 meters long in both males and females. Scimitar-horned oryx can live as long as 20 years. At the Smithsonian National Zoo, a female antelope died at 21 years old. This is an exception because female gazelles typically only have a lifespan of about 15 years.
