“Top team” — Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka praises vanquished Champions League foes Celtic

Bayern Munich found itself pushed to the limit in the second leg of its Champions League play-off tie vs. Celtic, staring down the barrel of extra time with the home scoreboard at 0-1 before an Alphonso Davies goal late in stoppage time lifted the Bavarians past the line.

If last week’s outcome, a tight 2-1 result with a nervy final few minutes at Celtic Park, could be attributed to the raucous atmosphere away from home…well, this time it happened at Allianz Arena.

But despite the disparity in league standing — Bayern play in the Bundesliga while Celtic are in the less esteemed but no less proud Scottish Premier League — Bayern players were not surprised to be tested.

“I don’t know if it was that surprising when you look at the first leg,” midfielder Leon Goretzka stated after the match (as captured via FCBayern.com). “We played against a really top team. Of course, we could have made it a bit easier on ourselves, had we not conceded that goal. But these three games over the last six days have simply been about getting the results and we’ve done that. So, for that reason, we’re very happy.”

Indeed, survive and advance: that was the task. Now the Bavarians have done just that.
