Trent Alexander-Arnold has just given a worrying update on his Liverpool contract in his own words.
The Athletic has shared some quotes from Trent Alexander-Arnold given on Saturday about his contract situation at Liverpool. They’re not positive to say the least.
Liverpool’s vice-captain makes it perfectly clear that he’s not going to sign a new contract out of any sentimentality. Instead, he’s chasing trophies.
“The most important thing is trophies if I’m honest,” he told reporters. “I want to win trophies.
“I’m a player who is highly motivated by winning things and being elite. That’s probably the main factor of anything. If you have a personality that’s elite, who wants to win and will do anything to win then that’s what drives them.”
That’s a particularly worrying thing to hear when Real Madrid are heavily rumoured to want Alexander-Arnold. They’re the club most synonymous with trophies, after all.
Trent Alexander-Arnold on his contract
Asked whether he wants to remain at Liverpool, this is all Alexander-Arnold had to say:
“I want to be a Liverpool player this season [as a minimum] is what I will say.”
But he also wants it to be clear that these negotiations won’t play out in public. They haven’t before and they won’t now.
“Look, I have been at the club 20 years now,” he said. “I have signed four or five contract extensions and none of those have been played out in public. This one won’t be either.”
All in all, you don’t want to hear this. There’s the absolute silence approach of Virgil van Dijk or Mohamed Salah. Then there’s the dream approach of having Alexander-Arnold say he just wants to play for the Reds.
Instead, we’re getting him making it clear that money won’t sway him, nor will a starring role. He just wants to win trophies and while Liverpool can certainly promise to compete for them, they aren’t battling Real Madrid’s reputation there.
Alexander-Arnold can leave Liverpool on a free transfer next year. It’s starting to look very worrying.
