pider-Man: No Way Home marks a turning point for Tom Holland‘s titular web-slinger. The movie also pays tribute to the past 20 years of Spider-Man films, brining back iconic villains, incorporating famous catchphrases, and possibly the return of two previous Spider-Men.
“There are some big surprises,” Holland teased at the film’s massive world premiere in Los Angeles on Monday. “I hope the fans like the movie, and I want to thank them. This has been the most incredible experience of my life. It means the world to me to be here with all the fans and share the final movie of the trilogy.”
Holland is most likely not hanging up his suit for good just yet. According to producer Amy Pascal, at least three more Spider-Man movies that would involve both Holland and the Marvel Comic Universe are in development. But Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, who oversees all of the studio’s films, said nothing has been made official regarding a future Spider-Man trilogy with Holland.
“Producers in Hollywood sometimes say things that aren’t 100% true,” said Rothman on the red carpet about Pascal’s comments. “The truth of the matter is, and I may be one of the three people on the planet to actually know the truth, we don’t know yet. Nothing has been decided. Time will tell. But the door is always open for Tom. I admire two things about him: his genuineness and his emotionality. I’m the dude who first saw Tom’s audition on tape on a little screen in my office. And those two things came through hugely then and they come through now three movies later.”
Although Holland’s future as Spider-Man is unclear, the British star said he would sign up to play the superhero for a seventh time. “I don’t know what the future of Spider-Man looks like. I don’t know if I’m going to be a part of it, but Spider-Man will always live on in me,” he said. “I know the studio is keen to figure out the next chapter of Spider-Man. If that happens to be with me, that’s very exciting, and I’ll say yes. But if it’s time for me to walk away, I’ll do so proudly.”
In the latest Spider-Man outing, the franchise’s history and characters from Sony’s previous five Spider-Man movies come together in a single fan-pleasing film. No Way Home, opening December 17 in theaters, begins immediately where its predecessor, Far From Home, left off. Peter Parker’s secret identity as Spider-Man has been revealed to the world, and he has been framed for killing Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal). The fallout has caused much harm to his girlfriend (Zendaya) and best friend (Jacob Batalon). Peter turns to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to restore his secret, inadvertently opening a Pandora’s box that starts to bring Spider-Man’s enemies into this universe, including Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), Electro (Jamie Foxx) and Sandman (Thomas Hayden Church). Some other familiar faces show up onscreen as well.
Following in the footsteps of Tobey Maguire‘s three Spider-Man movies and Andrew Garfield‘s two-film Amazing Spider-Man series, Holland wants his version of the web-slinger to be inspirational and relatable.
“I wanted to create a trilogy with Spider-Man that will be remembered forever and inspire young kids to be superheroes in their everyday life,” he said. “That they can see Peter Parker in themselves and do extraordinary things. I hope these films have done that. I love this character so much, and it’s been an honor to be a part of all this.”
