England had their Euro 2024 opening match against opponent Serbia. The squad with the most quality elements was selected by Southgate.
England coach Gareth Southgate has explained why Trent Alexander-Arnold was chosen to play alongside Declan Rice in midfield in the Three Lions’ opening Euro 2024 match against Serbia, despite also having Conor Gallagher and Kobbie Mainoo in the squad.
Gareth Southgate believes Trent Alexander-Arnold’s “fantastic” passing ability makes him the perfect choice to play in midfield in England’s Euro 2024 opener.
Southgate told BBC Sport: “Another passing option. I think he’s obviously got great range. It looks like we’re playing with a five-man defense so that’s not the case. At times There is a lot of space to break down the opposition, he will give us a different option than the other attacking players we have.”
BBC sports pundit Alan Shearer backed Southgate’s call to line up Alexander-Arnold in midfield and praised Southgate for choosing an aggressive squad.
On Alexander-Arnold, the former Newcastle star added: “There’s no doubt [it was the right decision]. What has to happen is that when Trent receives the ball, one or two people have to run forward for him as well.” They can be found, I have no doubt about that.”

In the previous match in Group C, Denmark and Slovenia drew 1-1 when Erik Janza blocked Christian Eriksen’s opening goal. That will be an opportunity for the England team to take first place if they win.
Positive signs came to the Three Lions in the match against Serbia when Bellingham helped the Three Lions temporarily take the lead in the 13th minute.
