Earlier this year, Disney announced that one of their popular comedies, Wizards of Waverly Place, was getting a spinoff. Fans of the original series, which ran from 2007-2012 and was created by Todd J. Greenwald, have been eagerly awaiting more details. Now, it’s been confirmed that Selena Gomez will reprise her beloved role as Alex Russo, but with a twist.

Selena Gomez will serve as an executive producer for the new spinoff, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, alongside her small-screen sibling, David Henrie. However, while she will return as Alex Russo, she will not be a series regular. Instead, Gomez will make a special appearance in the pilot episode, after which her involvement will primarily be behind the scenes.
The new series will focus on Alex’s older brother, Justin Russo, played by David Henrie. Justin, now an adult, will navigate the challenges of balancing family life and wizardry with his wife Giada (Mimi Gianopulos) and their two sons, Roman (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo (Max Matenko).
During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Selena Gomez expressed her excitement about the project. “I’m so excited,” she said. “It’s a show that means a lot to me. I will be in the first episode. I’m executive producing it. It brings me to tears because that is the beginning of where I started. And to honor it in this way has truly been a blast, and I can’t wait for people to see it.”
Wizards Beyond Waverly Place is created by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas, promising a new chapter in the Russo family saga while keeping the magical charm that captivated audiences years ago. Fans can look forward to seeing familiar faces and new adventures as the show explores the lives of the Russo siblings balancing everyday life with their wizarding responsibilities.
