Packers Hall of Famer to join Bears as a coordinator

According to Patrik Walker of DallasCowboys.com, the Cowboys have lost their assistant head coach and defensive backs coach Al Harris to the Chicago Bears. In Chicago, Harris will hold the title of passing game coordinator under new head coach Ben Johnson. Harris’ coaching contract with Dallas was on the same timeline as then Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, who was allowed to hit free agency after the 2024 season.

Harris is best known for his playing days with the Green Bay Packers, where he started 102 of his 128 career starts in his NFL career. In total, he played seven years in Green Bay, earning two Pro Bowl appearances in 2007 and 2008 and a second-team All-Pro nod in 2007. Harris returned to the team in 2013 to retire as a Packer and in 2021 was inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame.

Now, Harris will actively be working against Green Bay for a division rival, one whose head coach said he “enjoyed beating Matt LaFleur twice a year” in his opening press conference.

Beyond his time in Dallas, Harris has also had stops with the Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs and Florida Atlantic at the college level.

At the moment, it’s uncertain who the 50-year-old’s defensive coordinator will be. It was previously reported that former New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen is the Bears’ top candidate at defensive coordinator, but Chicago has also interviewed others for the job, including former Packers analyst Aubrey Pleasant.
