It has been a great past year for Margot Robbie after the success of her blockbuster movie Barbie, and now the Australian star is gearing up for a new superhero project that she will reportedly star in. This is not her first stint in a comic book role as she has previously portrayed Harley Quinn in 2016’s Suicide Squad.
Avengelyne is the invention of Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld and is about an angel who fights the forces of evil. Poor Things writer Tony McNamara has been tapped to draft the script, while Don’t Worry Darling director Olivia Wilde is set to helm the film.
Rob Liefeld’s Avengelyne Eyes Margot Robbie In The Lead
In a statement shared with Variety, comic book creator Rob Liefeld expressed his excitement over the fact that Avengelyne is finally coming to the big screen.
“This incredibly humbling journey to bring Avengelyne to life onscreen started through my relationship with super-producer Simon Kinberg who told me he had a perfect fit for the material and asked me to trust him.”
Margot Robbie is being eyed to star in the lead, while controversial director Olivia Wilde has been reported to be taking the wheel.
“Next thing I’m meeting with Margot Robbie and Olivia Wilde, and the connection was electric! They told me that they wanted Tony McNamara to write it, and after a pair of meetings Tony is onboard and things could not be more exciting.”
Liefeld seems very enthusiastic about the project finally making its way out of the comics pages. Avengelyne used to be an angel who was banished from heaven and made to fight demons on earth. She is known to possess super strength and magical blood.
“It’s all a result of Margot, Olivia, and Simon working their magic to assemble this incredible team of creatives, all intent on creating a cinematic experience like no other!”
According to Deadline, Warner Bros. just closed a seven-figure movie deal with another project, and Avengelyne’s deal is way bigger than the said agreement.
Fans Are Not Happy With Olivia Wilde Directing Avengelyne
Rob Liefeld previously explained what Avengelyne is all about and what makes her different from other comic book heroines (via Deadline):
“Avengelyne resonated so powerfully with the audience because her story of redemption is one that is so relatable. A fallen angel, sentenced to redeem herself by serving humanity, Earth is a foreign environment to her, she must adapt in order to save herself as well as mankind. Her dilemma provides humor amidst the larger plot engine driving her journey.”
As exciting as this sounds, many fans were not thrilled to find out Olivia Wilde’s attachment to the project. This stems from the previous controversy involving her film Don’t Worry Darling. Check out what fans are saying:

Olivia Wilde’s record isn’t so good after Don’t Worry Darling. It will come down to her how she translates that script to the movie, regardless of who is the actress.

It looks like Wilde’s involvement is not a good thing for fans, but the majority are excited to see Margot Robbie work her charm again on the screen. No filming production or release date schedule has been announced yet.
