HAD. AND WITHOUT MUCH SNOW. YOU KNOW, WHEN MANY PEOPLE HEAR THE WORD BLIZZARD, THEY IMMEDIATELY THINK HIGH AMOUNT OF SNOW. BUT THAT’S NOT USUALLY THE CASE. IN TODAY’S WEATHER EXPERT METEOROLOGIST CAITLIN HARVEY EXPLAINS WHY. WATCH A POWERFUL STORM SYSTEM ROLL THROUGH FOR YOUR TUESDAY, BRINGING THE CHANCE FOR BLIZZARD CONDITIONS. EASTERN NEBRASKA, WESTERN IOWA. AND WE’RE NOT EXPECTING A MOUNTAIN OF SNOW. WE’LL EXPLAIN THAT IT DOESN’T COME DOWN TO HOW MUCH SNOW WE’LL GET, BUT ALL WIND SPEEDS AND VISIBILITY. SO WITH BLIZZARD CONDITIONS, A COUPLE THINGS NEED TO BE MET. THE CRITERIA, IF YOU WILL. SUSTAINED WINDS SUSTAINED THE ONES THAT DON’T LET UP OF 35 MILES AN HOUR. OF COURSE YOU CAN GET GUSTS EVEN STRONGER. AND WE ARE EXPECTING THOSE AS THE WINDS PICK UP. EVEN WITH A LIGHT SNOW AND WE’RE EXPECTING HEAVY SNOW, WE’LL SEE VISIBILITY DROP TO A QUARTER MILE OR LESS. IF WE GET THESE CONDITIONS TO PERSIST FOR AT LEAST THREE HOURS THERE YOU HAVE YOUR BLIZZARD WARNING. DESPITE ONLY POTENTIALLY GETTING A COUPLE INCHES OF SNOW. City of Omaha officials urged residents to be aware of forecasted blizzard conditions Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning.Officials said that city employees will be plowing and spreading on the main and secondary roads as snow begins. Contractors will be on standby to begin plowing neighborhood streets after midnight.Timeline: Blizzard warning for Omaha area Tuesday into WednesdayAround 6 p.m., expect rain to changeover to heavy, wet snow in the Omaha metro.As the transition happens, the wind will ramp up and potentially gust 50 to 70 mph throughout the night. A blizzard warning will be in effect from 8 p.m. Tuesday through 3 a.m. Wednesday for most of eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa, including the Omaha metro.Several hours of blizzard conditions are expected due to the high wind and falling snow. Power outages are possible.”Our plan may be adjusted as needed and for safety. We are also coordinating with OPPD; their storm team is on standby for very strong winds. Around 6 p.m., expect rain to changeover to heavy, wet snow in the Omaha metro.
As the transition happens, the wind will ramp up and potentially gust 50 to 70 mph throughout the night. A blizzard warning will be in effect from 8 p.m. Tuesday through 3 a.m. Wednesday for most of eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa, including the Omaha metro.
