This is the jaw-dropping moment two hungry snakes found themselves caught in a tug-of-war over a liʋe fish. The first checkered keelfish plucked catfish from a stream in Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh, India, on July 20.

He hit the ʋictiм in its jaws and was pulling it out of the water for lunch when a second keelback reared up and cut off its tail. I was lucky enough to take some perfectly timed photos and videos showing the reptiles fighting over their lunch.

Not only were the two snakes fighting, but the fish was also trying to escape the situation, a feat it finally achieved after 30 minutes. That fish had a strong will. My passion and holiness is capturing rare moments and seeing this was inedible. This was the first time I saw a fish that dared to fight a snake.

The three creatures were trapped in the strange position for about 30 minutes. The snake holding the fish’s tail got tired first and dropped into the river. The other snake had to let go a few minutes later and slide away when the fish began to squirm. The fish made her return to the water and the snakes ran out of food. The fish swam away, so I’m sure it was still alive.

The keelsnake is a common, non-huge water snake found throughout Asia, while the catfish is known for its prominent pellets, which resemble a cat’s whiskers.
