Get into the holiday spirit with Bill Murray’s new Christmas special on Netflix, starting December 4th. Alongside him are his good friend George Clooney and pop sensation Miley Cyrus, making for a star-studded lineup.
Drawing inspiration from the classic 1954 film White Christmas, which featured George Clooney’s aunt Rosemary Clooney and Danny Kaye, A Very Murray Christmas follows Murray’s character as he gets ready for a live holiday show at the Carlyle Hotel in New York. However, when a snowstorm cancels the broadcast, Murray and his friends decide to make the best of the situation by celebrating with the hotel staff and other unexpected guests who join in on the festivities.
Traditional: The music performance brings back memories of vintage TV holiday shows and the classic 1954 movie White Christmas starring Bing Crosby.
Monumental Duo: Clooney, aged 54, enlisted the talents of Murray, 65, for his film The Monuments Men, leading to a strong bond between the two as close buddies.
The snowy weather added a touch of magic to the gathering of Murray, Clooney, the stylish pop star, and a group of dazzling showgirls who all seemed to be enjoying themselves immensely.
Coppola shared how the idea for the special show came about and how she successfully brought together such a star-studded cast. She revealed, “It all started with a desire to see Bill Croon and our love for those classic Christmas specials from the ’70s and ’80s. Bill and George are friends, so that’s how George got involved. Then, we wanted a young pop star, and I had met Miley through Marc Jacobs, she was enthusiastic and kind, so I reached out to her through a mutual friend.”
Sultry Santa: 22-year-old Cyrus turned heads in a strapless red mini dress adorned with white accents, paired with matching stilettos. The audience was mesmerized as she belted out a heartfelt rendition of Silent Night, with only Paul Shaffer on the piano for accompaniment.
During the show, Cyrus also performedaother song – Let It Snow! – showcasing her incredible vocal range. Director Coppola was in awe of her talent, mentioning that the duo put the Silent Night performance together in a hurry during lunch break. Witnessing Cyrus sing live with just a piano made a lasting impression on him, emphasizing her impressive vocal abilities.
Performer: The actor from Ghostbusters sported a Santa hat and cape in the unique event put together by his Lost In Translation filmmaker, Sofia Coppola.
Stuck: In the holiday-themed film, Murray stars as the host of a festive TV program who finds himself stranded at the luxurious Carlyle Hotel in New York due to a snowstorm disrupting filming. Comedy star Amy Poehler, a former SNL cast member, also makes an appearance in the entertaining movie.
Having accepted the fact that he’s stuck indoors due to the snowstorm, Murray devises a plan to make the most of his time and enlists the help of the hotel staff to join in on the fun.
