This period of social distancing seems to be bringing out the character in all of us but for some, this is manifesting more literally than others. And by some, we mean Miley Cyrus, who just revived a fan favorite persona of hers.
For a special April Fools’ Day episode of her Instagram Live show, Bright Minded, Miley brought Ashley O, her Black Mirror character, back to life. The singer donned a lavender wig and kicked off the show with a smashing lip sync of Ashley’s hit song “On a Roll.”
But the wig wasn’t the only Ashley O gear that Miley sported. She danced around while wearing a silver sequined jacket embroidered with the character’s initials, “A.O.” And, wow, it’s suddenly 2019 again.
Miley followed up her performance by hosting the show in-character as Ashley, interviewing Brazillian singer-songwriter Anitta, Zoë Kravitz, artist Ashley Longshore, and Diplo, who debuted his own remix of the Bright Minded theme song. If you hurry, you might still be able to catch the special show on her IG stories, but if not, don’t fret because Miley’s been uploading all of her Bright Minded conversations to her YouTube channel.
In case you need to jog your memory, “On a Roll” was the main hit of Miley’s character in the last episode of Black Mirror’s fifth season, which premiered last summer on Netflix. The episode gets a lot more serious than this Instagram Live clip would let on — it is Black Mirror after all — but there’s no doubt that “On a Roll” is still a certified banger.
Following the release of the episode, “On a Roll” has managed to have a pretty powerful life of its own. The song, which is a reinterpretation of Nine Inch Nails’ “Head Like A Hole,” became a hit around the world before being named one of the Top 100 Best Songs of 2019 by Billboard. Then again, creating hit after hit in character is basically second nature to Miley at this point (Best of Both Worlds anybody?)

But on another note, Miley has been absolutely killing the Instagram Live game as of late. She kicked off her period of social isolation by launching Bright Minded, a series of celebrity conversations about life issues held over Instagram Live.
In this brief time she’s already welcomed guests like Hailey Bieber, with whom she discussed spirituality and sexuality; Demi Lovato, who opened up about anxiety and body shaming; her former Hannah Montana co-star Emily Osment, who joined Miley to reminisce about their time together on the Disney Channel classic, and many other celebs.
And, oh, yeah, she’s also revived Hannah herself, dropping some carefully selected clips from the show onto her Instagram to remind people to stay home and social distance!
