At the age of 36, Lionel Messi beat Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe to win the 2023 Ballon d’Or, thanks to his first World Cup title in his career. This is the eighth time he has received this award in his career, previously in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019 and 2021. He is the first player to receive the Ballon d’Or while playing for a club outside of Europe.
