Six of Lionel Messi’s shirts from Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph have sold for $7.8 million at an auction in New York. The shirts were displayed at Sotheby’s New York headquarters during a two-week online auction that ended late last night (December 14).
Auction house Sotheby’s said the price for the kit broke the previous record for a player-related item, making it the most valuable piece of sports memorabilia sold at auction this year.
Previously, this record belonged to Michael Jordan’s (basketball) jersey worn in the opening game of the 1998 NBA Finals for $10.1 million in 2022.

The collection includes the shirt Messi wore during the first half of the 2022 World Cup final against France in Qatar, where Argentina beat France on penalties to win their third World Cup.
In which Messi scored 2/3 goals for Argentina to win the most prestigious title of the most attractive tournament on the planet.
Sotheby’s also said that part of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to the UNICAS project, founded by the Sant Joan de Deu Barcelona Children’s Hospital with support from Leo Messi’s charity, to help children with rare diseases.
