Describing his relationship with Lionel Messi, Kun Aguero said they are like “an old married couple”.
With the success of the Argentina team winning the 2022 World Cup, Lionel Messi is one of the most mentioned phrases in recent days.
At the award ceremony held at Lusail Stadium, the figure of close friend Sergio Aguero beside Messi and helping the 36-year-old player recreate the glorious moment like Maradona in 1986 became a beautiful moment for world football, Argentine football and for the Messi – Aguero duo.
If Messi is a football legend at Barcelona and PSG, Aguero also has impressive achievements when playing for Barcelona and Man City. Both played for the same flag since their youth, shared a room during international matches for many years and are true soulmates.
On the football field, they are a perfect pair, off the field, they are close brothers. Although Aguero describes their personalities as completely different, in nearly two decades together, they have never been alone, whether in tragedy or glory.
Met since childhood
They met when they were just 16-17 years old boys.
Recalling their first meeting, Kun Aguero shared: “We were at a training camp with the national team. I was with the U16 team and he was training with the U17 team for the South American championship.”
“We were all together, all the same age as me. We all sat around the table Garay, Leo, Formica and me. Leo sat across from me. Then I said to him quietly ‘what’s your name?’ and he said ‘Lionel’, ‘what’s your last name?’, ‘Messi’. The other two looked at me and said ‘don’t you know who that is?'”.
After meeting briefly, both of them just happened to follow each other’s careers through matches on TV, until they both became remarkable young talents and were called up to the Argentina U20 youth team. Being of the same age and having quite similar appearances, from that time on, the two stars were paired together in the same room and became soul mates from then on.
They always respect each other even though their personalities are somewhat opposite.
Sharing with Diario Sport, Kun Aguero said: “We have completely different personalities. Messi is always neat, responsible, and tidy. While I am messy and very slow. Therefore, when we share a room, there are many funny things that happen between us. But Messi always shares a room with me, because we get along very well. We are like an old married couple.”
Friendships forged through tragedy
Just like love, stories about friendship all encounter “storms”. Messi and Aguero have experienced the darkest sad story of their lives together.
The Argentine national football team’s aviation duo have overcome many ups and downs together.
Accordingly, before becoming Messi’s best friend, Aguero had a close friend who played with him at Independiente Club, Emiliano Molina. However, tragedy struck when Emiliano was involved in a terrible car accident while Aguero was on tour in the Netherlands.
After information about the incident reached members of the coaching staff, they attempted to cut off the hotel’s Wi-Fi as a measure to protect the striker from encountering the sad news before everyone delicately informed him.
Enjoy the glory together
Overcoming many ups and downs together on the field and in life, although their lives have changed a lot, their close friendship is still something that does not fade between the two.
Off the pitch, since they were two boys who only knew football, they are now family men and have an infinite bond when their first child Benjamin Aguero was adopted by his best friend Messi as godfather.

As players, both have been brilliant in their club colours with many big and small titles and have always been at the top of the list of the greatest strikers of the 21st century. In their national team colours, both are great strikers as they have surpassed the legendary Diego Maradona in the number of goals scored in the international arena.
At the 2022 World Cup, Messi became the “locomotive” that brought Argentina to the championship after 36 years of waiting. As for Aguero, although he unfortunately had to retire from his career due to being diagnosed with a heart condition, he is still a pillar of support next to Messi, still the one who was given the privilege of “sleeping in the same room” with his close friend the night before the final and is still the one who is ready to “create” legendary moments for his close brother.
