A reflection on all the relevant Liverpool transfer news from a Tuesday during which we learned more about alternatives to Martin Zubimendi as well as potential Anfield outgoings.
Five Martin Zubimendi alternatives
There is no question about it Zubimendi’s rejection is a major blow but the transfer window is still open and Liverpool have time to fix the gaping problems needed to be addressed in the squad.
Most notably, that is the lack of players capable of playing in the no.6 role. With just over two weeks to go all the focus now will be on who Liverpool will look to target in the coming weeks ahead.
Here are five alternative options the club could look to approach.
Rabiot interest
Following Liverpool’s well-publicised chase of Martin Zubimendi, a different long-term target is still available on a free – and the Reds are believed to be making a decision.
Versatile French midfielder Adrien Rabiot has been at Juventus since 2019, coincidentally also signing on a free transfer. Allowing his contract to run down in Turin, Rabiot now finds himself in the same position as five years ago, and it is believed he has long held an interest in playing Premier League football.
Diaz linked with multiple clubs
Luis Diaz caught the eye in Arne Slot’s first game at Anfield against Sevilla at the weekend and even scored a sensational goal.
The Liverpool winger hasn’t quite gotten going in a red shirt so far. However, he is highly rated at the club and has been lauded by his teammates in the past. He was described as an ‘unbelievable’ player by Conor Bradley in an interview with LFCTV last season.
But he’s also been in Barcelona’s transfer radar with Liverpool reportedly open to listening to offers for the Colombian winger.
And it seems Barcelona are not the only club interested in Diaz. In the latest sensational claim in Spanish media, it has been suggested that Diaz has agreed a five year deal with Manchester City.
Liverpool to hijack Gallagher deal?
After missing out on Martin Zubimendi, Liverpool could now look to turn towards a different midfield target and hijack a £36m deal involving Chelsea.
With the club running out of options to bring in a midfielder, the Reds could turn to a player who is already on the brink of leaving his current club and who Liverpool have admired in the past.
The Reds have been linked with Conor Gallagher in previous windows and the midfielder is currently available for a transfer away from Chelsea.
Gallagher has been training with the club’s U21 side before travelling to Spain earlier this week as talks between Chelsea and Atletico Madrid took place for a £36m transfer.
However, those talks have collapsed with Gallagher now set to travel back to the UK. This leaves space for Liverpool to hijack the deal and bring him to Anfield instead.
