Liverpool can register Ryan Gravenberch and five new names in next season’s Premier League squad

Ryan Gravenberch was a notable omission from Liverpool’s Premier League squad last season, but that’s all about to change.

After the closure of both transfer windows, the Merseyside outfit submitted a squad containing no more than 25 players from which no more than 17 overseas players could be named with the remaining eight places available to those considered homegrown members.

To be considered homegrown, players need to have been registered with any club affiliated to The Football Association or the Welsh FA for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons, or 36 months, before his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21).

Keeping that in mind, as things currently stand, the remaining Liverpool senior players considered ‘homegrown’ from last season’s squad that was updated in February are Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Curtis Jones, Rhys Williams and Caoimhin Kelleher.

Returning loanees Vitezslav Jaros (amid talk of a first-team promotion)Sepp van den Berg and Nathaniel Phillips push the number to eight, whilst Fabio Carvalho and goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluga will no longer qualify as U21 players from next season and will therefore have to be registered (taking the homegrown spots) if they’re to feature under new head coach Arne Slot.

Following the releases of Thiago Alcantara, Joel Matip and Adrian, judging by the official website Liverpool currently have Alisson Becker, Luis Diaz, Wataru Endo, Cody Gakpo, Ibrahima Konate, Alexis Mac Allister, Darwin Nunez, Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai, Diogo Jota, Kostas Tsimikas and Virgil van Dijk listed as their 13 senior overseas players.

Gravenberch eligible for Liverpool’s 25-man Premier League squad

The reason for Gravenberch’s omission from last season’s squad following his £34.2m transfer from Bayern Munich was simply because he was included in a separate list for U21 players – along with Conor Bradley, Stefan Bajcetic, Jarell Quansah , Ben Doak and Harvey Elliott – which allowed him to eligible throughout the campaign.

However, this won’t be the case for the Dutchman next season as Under-21 players will have been born on or after 1 January 2003. Therefore, as he is born on May 16 2002 he must be registered in the 25-man Premier League squad in order to be eligible for the competition.

So, Gravenberch is among six new names – along with Jaros, van den Berg, Phillips, Fabio Carvalho and Pitaluga – who are in contention to be included in Liverpool’s Premier League squad for the 2024/25 season – provided they are all still at the club when the summer transfer window closes.

It’s also important to note that decisions have to be made regarding youngsters Tyler Morton and Owen Beck as they to have to be registered in order to figure into Slot’s plans for the 2024/25 campaign.

Furthermore, with the Reds expected to be busy in the summer transfer window amid links to Anthony GordonGoncalo Inacio and Adrien Rabiot just to name a few, it’s worth noting they must adhere to the Premier League rules when permitted to name a 25-man squad.
