The 39-year-old forward made his debut for the Selecao in 2003. He won the UEFA European Championship in 2016 and the UEFA Nations League in 2018–19. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is also his nation’s and overall international all-time leading goal scorer. He has scored 130 goals in 210 appearances while also providing 47 assists.

The Selecao captain also equaled the all-time assists record (8) at the European Championship during Portugal’s clash against Turkey on June 22. However, the Euro 2024 group stage marked the first time that Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t score a goal in the group stage of a major international tournament.

Cristiano Ronaldo received a yellow card in Portugal’s final Euro 2024 group-stage clash

Portugal faced a 2-0 loss against Georgia in their last group-stage match of Euro 2024 on June 26. Georgia opened their scoring just two minutes as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia netted from an assist by Georges Mikautadze.

The Selecao captain was given a yellow card for dissent in the 28th minute after he reacted when the referee denied him a penalty for a possible shirt pull. Georgia doubled their lead, with Georges Mikautadze successfully netting a penalty in the 57th minute. It was given following a foul committed by defender Antonio Silva on Luka Lochoshvili.

Following the Euro 2024 defeat, Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez addressed Ronaldo’s first booking in the clash and said (via @TimelineCR7 on X):

“VAR was not consistent. It was a penalty on Cristiano, without a doubt, we suffered.”
