Basketball superstar LeBron James’ jersey costs 3.7 million USD while the late Princess Diana’s dress only costs 604,800 USD.
According to AFP , the memorabilia of two world-famous figures was sold in an auction held by Sotheby’s in New York (USA) on January 28.
The $3.7 million is also five times higher than the previous record for one of basketball star LeBron James’ jerseys.
The auction received more attention than usual for 38-year-old LA Lakers icon LeBron, even more than when he was closing in on the NBA’s all-time scoring record.
The item just sold by Sotheby’s is the jersey LeBron wore when he played for the Miami Heat in the 2013 NBA Finals, defeating the San Antonio Spurs in seven sets.
It broke the previous record of $630,000, which was for a James All-Star jersey worn in 2020.
In his career, LeBron James only needs 178 more points to break the record of 38,387 points scored by Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. This is also one of the oldest and most desired records in the world of basketball .
Auctioning sports memorabilia worn by legends during matches is now a lucrative business.
In September 2022, Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA Finals jersey sold for $10.1 million, making it the most valuable sports item in the world.
Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” jersey was sold by Sotheby’s in London last year for $9.3 million.
Yesterday (January 28), Sotheby’s also sold the late Princess Diana ‘s dress for $604,800.
