Google and Selena Gomez Drop a $25 Million Bombshell for Teen Mental Health! Is This the Game-Changer Schools Desperately Need?

Posted: 2024-8-15

Google.org and Selena Gomez are teaming up to tackle the mental health crisis among teens with a new initiative. On August 5, Google.org announced a $10 million donation to fund mental health projects on DonorsChoose.org, a platform where teachers seek donations for classroom needs. This significant contribution is part of a larger $25 million commitment to enhance mental health support and online safety for youth.

The funding aims to address the rise in childhood depression and anxiety exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Google.org’s investment includes $6 million for DonorsChoose.org to support mental health projects in schools and $1.5 million for organizations like the Jed Foundation and the Child Mind Institute to provide training for educators.

Selena Gomez’s Rare Impact Fund is receiving $1.25 million from Google.org to boost resources for mental health. Gomez, who has openly discussed her own mental health struggles, emphasized the importance of supportive adults in guiding teenagers through their challenges.

The initiative also provides $200 credits for teachers completing mental health training courses. DonorsChoose.org has seen a significant rise in mental health-related requests, including items like calming chairs and meditative stuffed animals.

Despite growing awareness of mental health issues, funding for related nonprofits remains limited. Experts stress that increased investment in school-based mental health support is crucial as schools often serve as the first point of contact for students seeking help.

This partnership between Google.org and Selena Gomez aims to significantly impact student mental health by providing crucial resources and support. The initiative is a vital step toward ensuring that students have the necessary tools and guidance to support their emotional wellbeing.
