Gene Hackman starred in several iconic movies throughout his legendary Hollywood career, but most people probably can’t name his final film.
Hackman, known for his roles in “Hoosiers” and “Unforgiven,” among others, decided to retire from Hollywood after the final movie of his career, which was released in 2004. More than 20 years later, he tragically died at home, along with his wife, Betsy Arakawa, and a family dog. Hackman and his wife, along with one of their dogs, was found dead inside their Santa Fe, New Mexico home.
The longtime Hollywood star shocked most when he called it quits in 2004. Most actors continue to star in movies or TV shows well into their 70s, 80s or even 90s. Robert De Niro, for example, is starring in a new Netflix show at 81 years old. Hackman certainly could have done the same, if he wanted to.
However, it was Hackman’s surprising movie in 2004 that was the last of his career.
The cast of Welcome to Mooseport.
Hackman’s final movie came in 2004, when he starred in “Welcome to Mooseport” along with Ray Ramano.
The 2004 movie, which was directed by Donald Petrie, is about a former U.S. President, played by Hackman, who retires to his vacation home in Mooseport, Maine. He eventually agrees to run for mayor of the small town. However, he soon faces stiff competition from Handy Harrison, a local hardware shop owner, played by Romano.
The film did not get the best of reviews. It currently has a 13 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a 5.3 rating on IMDB.
Still, for those interested in the film, or those who just want to watch the final movie of Hackman’s career, you are in luck.
“Welcome to Mooseport” is currently streaming on Amazon Prime. Those with an Amazon Prime can currently watch the movie, which Amazon Prime describes as:
Cast your ballot for big laughs when Gene Hackman and Ray Romano find themselves in a hilariously heated race for mayor of Mooseport, Maine. A local plumber (Romano) is plunged into the national spotlight when he takes on the former President of the United States (Hackman), who can’t believe he’s running against the man installing his toilets!
An investigation into Hackman’s death is currently ongoing.
