Earthquake rocks Bergen County as rattling and loud booms reported. Here are the details

Did New Jersey just have another earthquake?

Numerous New Jersey residents took to social media early Friday afternoon, reporting loud booms, rattling and shaking and wondering whether they were experiencing an earthquake.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey’s earthquake map, a magnitude 2.4 earthquake with a depth of 7.7 kilometers occurred near Paramus just after 1 p.m. on Friday.

Residents’ reactions to the reported shaking, which have been posted on Reddit, X and other sites, came in from several towns in North Jersey including New Milford, Emerson and Paramus.

“Crazy rumbling just occurred in my area. Maybe an earthquake. North Jersey,” posted one user on X with numerous other posts echoing their statement.

As posts and comments flood social media, local police departments are informing residents of the earthquake, including the Glen Rock Police Department which posted on X and Nixle that is aware of the earthquake, writing, “The USGS has confirmed a M 2.4 earthquake occurred today at or about 1:02 p.m. in the Paramus/Glen Rock area. We have no reports of damage or cause for concern at this time.”

This quake comes about nine months after the 4.8 magnitude earthquake that rocked the state last April.

Scientists found that the April 5 quake, one of the strongest ever recorded in New Jersey, was an unusual one due to the wide-ranging and atypical pattern of damage as well as the high number of aftershocks – more than 200. It was the strongest earthquake recorded in New Jersey since a 5.3 magnitude quake occurred in 1783.

Did you feel the earthquake? Report your experience to USGS

“Contribute to citizen science. Please tell us about your experience,” says the USGS. As of 2:15 p.m., the USGS had received 426 reports for this particular quake ranging from Bergen County and nearby North Jersey towns into New York.
