The earthquake was recorded just after 1 p.m. at a depth of about 7.7 kilometers (4.7 miles).

People on social media said they could feel the earthquake in parts of New York as well, including in the Bronx and Yonkers.

“I felt it in my house. I’m in Westchester County!!! I thought it was my washer cause I put in a fat quilt,” one Instagram user told PIX11 News.

An earthquake was recorded near Paramus, New Jersey on Jan. 24, 2025, according to the USGS.

Northern New Jersey was rattled by a series of earthquakes and aftershocks following a 4.8-magnitude earthquake that could be felt in New York City and as far away as Boston and Philadelphia on April 5, 2024.

Roughly 42 million people felt the earthquake, according to the USGS. While damage from the earthquake was minor, it was the biggest earthquake to occur in the region since a 5.2-magnitude earthquake near Brooklyn in 1884.

In a report released in October, researchers said the April 5 earthquake displayed “peculiar behavior” that raises questions about the potential threat of future earthquakes in the region.

Based on existing models, the earthquake should’ve done substantial damage at its epicenter near Tewksbury, but it didn’t, according to researchers.

The researchers said the earthquake shook New York City harder than expected. They also said the earthquake’s shaking traveled “strangely far,” extending all the way to Virginia and Maine.
