Donald and Melania Trump shared their first dance as the new U.S. president and first lady on Monday.
The couple were center of attention as they hit the stage at the Commander-in-Chief Inaugural Ball after Trump’s inauguration ceremony. The ball is dedicated to the six branches of the military.
Why It Matters
Trump was sworn in as the 47th president at a ceremony in the Capitol Hill rotunda on Monday morning.
In his inauguration speech, Trump promised to introduce sweeping changes and later signed multiple executive orders, including on pardoning January 6 insurrectionists, ending birthright citizenship and exiting the Paris climate agreement.

What to Know
Trump and the first lady danced to a cover of the Elvis Presley song “An American Trilogy.”
The president wore a traditional black tuxedo for the ball, while Melania stunned in a black and white Hervé Pierre strapless gown, complete with a black choker and silver pendant.
Pierre also designed Melania’s dress for Trump’s inauguration ball in 2017 during his first term in the White House.
“It is a big honor to have collaborated with the first lady on the design for her inaugural dress,” he said in a statement to Women’s Wear Daily. “It was clear that Mrs. Trump was gravitating towards a combination of black and white – true to her own style and vision.”
The couple were then joined by Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, and later took turns dancing with different members of the military, according to custom.
Before leaving the ball, Trump spoke to American troops stationed in South Korea who appeared by video link on large screens.
“How are we doing over there. How’s Kim Jong Un doing?” Trump joked, referring to the North Korean leader.
The Commander-in-Chief ball was the first of three events the couple attended on Monday night. They also attended the Liberty Ball and the Starlight Ball at Union Station.
“We needed three because we have such support,” Trump told the crowd at the Liberty Ball at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, per MSN.
