Wolf Man—a reboot movie featuring Universal Pictures’ famed werewolf character—is prowling on the big screen this weekend. Are there any end- or post-credits scenes that suggest the monster’s reign of terror will continue?
Universal Pictures, of course, released a series of legendary monster movies in the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s, making such characters as Frankenstein’s monster, Dracula, the Mummy, the Bride of Frankenstein and the Creature from the Black Lagoon pop culture icons in the process.
ForbesWhen Is Horror Thriller ‘Wolf Man’ Coming To Streaming?By Tim LammersAlso among Universal’s classic monster movies was The Wolf Man—starring Lon Chaney Jr. in the title role—which was released in 1941. After that, Chaney’s werewolf character appeared in a handful of follow-up movies, and in 2010 Universal brought the character back for another go-round with the remake of The Wolfman starring Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins.
The reboot version of Wolf Man, however, is director Leigh Whannell’s reimagining of the classic lycanthrope tale and the cursed Lawrence Talbot—played by Chaney and Del Toro—is nowhere to be found.
Forbes‘Wolf Man’ Reviews: Does New Werewolf Movie Have Fangs?By Tim LammersUnlike the period settings of the previous werewolf films, Whannell’s new version of Wolf Man is set in modern day, as Charlotte (Julia Garner) and Ginger (Matilda Firth)—the wife and young daughter of Blake (Christopher Abbott)—fight for survival as he transforms into the fanged beast.
Wolf Man is the second Universal Monsters reboot film directed by Whannell, who was the filmmaker behind the 2020 hit reimagining of The Invisible Man. So, while Whannell appears to be the go-to filmmaker for another Universal Monsters film, is there any indication in the end credits or post-credits of where the legendary franchise is going?
Spoiler alert: The next section discusses the end credits of “Wolf Man.”
What Happens During The End Credits Of ‘Wolf Man’?
Generally, end credits or post-credits scenes serve one of two purposes. Either they tie up loose ends from a scene earlier in the film or they tease the possibility of a sequel.
However, Wolf Man does not have an end credits or post-credits scene. That’s not to say, however, that Universal Pictures isn’t cooking up more monster movie adventures.
ForbesWhere To Stream Classic Werewolf Movies Before You See ‘Wolf Man’By Tim LammersAfter all, Wolf Man, per Variety, had a $25 million production budget before prints and advertising, which is relatively low in comparison to most big studio films. Like The Invisible Man, Wolf Man was produced in conjunction with Jason Blum’s Blumhouse, a horror movie company that focuses on making modestly budgeted fright flicks.
Of course, there will be some plot roadblocks that have to be cleared for another Wolf Man film to happen, but as Lon Chaney Jr. proved in his films as the Wolf Man, anything is possible when it comes to keeping a franchise alive.
Since Wolf Man is a genre film rooted in the monster movie glory of Universal Pictures, there certainly seems to be potential for more.
Forbes‘Nosferatu’: See First Official Look Of Bill Skarsgård As Count OrlokBy Tim LammersChaney, you have to remember, went on to reprise Lawrence Talbot/the Wolf Man in such Universal Monsters classics as Frankenstein vs. The Wolfman, House of Frankenstein, House of Dracula and Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, where the character was featured alongside the likes of Frankenstein’s monster and Count Dracula.
That’s not to say Universal should try to resurrect its Dark Universe concept—an idea that began and ended with Tom Cruise’s big-budget monster misfire The Mummy in 2017—which would have featured a shared universe of monsters like the days of old.
If the studio does try that route, however, keeping Blumhouse involved would be a smart move to keep future films’ budgets in check.
Rated R, Wolf Man opens Friday in theaters nationwide.
