If today, the music industry has Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo, then 20 years ago, Avril Lavigne was the pop punk princess who stirred up the world with her vibrant songs, fiery performances and fashion style, sometimes as a rebellious schoolgirl, sometimes as a strong “big sister”.

Recently, the former star returned after many years of quiet activities due to health reasons. Although not as famous as before, the petite singer still maintains a “cool” appearance in black outfits and smoky eyes, not much different from the 2000s, when young people around the world swayed to the melodies of Complicated, Girlfriend, … Let’s take a look back at seven of Avril Lavigne’s most famous and typical outfits in her golden age.
MTV VMA debut (2002)
Just two months after releasing her debut album Let Go in 2002—one of the greatest albums of all time—Avril Lavigne rocked New York’s Radio City Music Hall in her Complicated video look: a wide-brimmed tie and a white tank top. She paired it with low-rise camouflage pants, skate shoes, studded bracelets, and colored plastic bangles—accessories that were banned in Florida schools because of their sexual connotations. In a nod to her homeland, or perhaps for good luck, Avril pinned a Canadian flag to her tie at the MTV Video Music Awards, where she was nominated for Best New Artist in a Video.
Performance at Jingle Ball (2002)
Every December, LA KIIS FM hosts a holiday concert featuring the year’s hottest artists. In 2002, the show featured Avril Lavigne, Destiny’s Child, Mariah Carey, and Justin Timberlake. Instead of wearing bright red to celebrate Christmas, Avril wore an asymmetrical black Dickies crop top with black pants, paired with a wide white leather belt printed with red stars. In addition to the skull and crossbones necklace, the square belt buckle that read “CAUTION: BIOHAZARD” was the real highlight of the outfit.
Grammy Awards Red Carpet (2003)
Nominated for several Grammy Awards (Song of the Year, Best Female Pop Performance for “I’m With You,” Best Female Rock Performance for “Loss Grip,” and the hit single “Sk8er Boi”), all eyes at Madison Square Garden that year were on 19-year-old Avril Lavigne. Naturally, she took the opportunity to express her personal style and point of view. Dressed in a formal outfit, Avril opened her jacket to reveal the words “ROCK ON” taped to the inside of her jacket. Her skull belt buckle, black Converse, and rainbow-colored nails were also interesting accents.
Rehearsal at the MTV Icon Metallica show (2003)
In the early 2000s, MTV launched a series of specials honoring the legends. Famous singers of the time were invited to perform covers of their predecessors’ big hits. Featuring Korn, Limp Bizkit, Sum 41, and Snoop Dogg, Avril was introduced as “a small but mighty woman” and performed a masterful rendition of Metallica’s “Fuel.” Before changing into a black tank top emblazoned with “Metallica,” Avril wore a cool look during sound checks, including baggy blue jeans with chains, checkered Vans, a vintage T-shirt advertising a Canadian town, and yellow 1950s cat-eye sunglasses.
Behind the Scenes of a Show (2004)
Avril – the owner of the “best-selling album of the 21st century by a Canadian artist” – is sitting in the waiting room of a pub in Camden, north London. To promote her upcoming second album, Under My Skin, Avril’s team came up with the idea of holding a secret fanclub show at the birthplace of punk thirty years ago, Camden Monarch. Avril sports vertical zips on her trousers, pink and black striped socks, Docs and a two-tone, freshly dyed hairdo.
Live performance on On Air with Ryan Seacrest (2004)
Avril Lavigne looked stunning in low-rise tartan trousers, a skull T-shirt and flip-flops. She added a smoky eye and curled hair extensions to her look, a nod to the 2000s.
Date in Central Park (2004)
In real life, when walking through a park in New York with her countryman boyfriend, Deryck Whibley – leader of the Sum 41 group, Avril Lavigne is still very cool with a black outfit with studs, locks, chains, along with Doc Martens and a striped scarf. This was the year she publicly announced her relationship with Deryck Whibley. A few years later, they got married and divorced. After a short time dating Brody Jenner, she remarried a second time to Chad Kroeger of Nickelback, and a third time to a Texas billionaire named Phillip Sarofim Phew.
