Cody Gakpo scored his second goal of Euro 2024 during the Netherland’s clash with Austria, and in the process sent another clear message to new Liverpool boss Arne Slot.
Gakpo though stepped up with an equalizer straight after the break. The Dutch broke quickly, with the Liverpool star cutting inside from the left onto his right foot to superbly curl the ball home with a confident finish.
It was Gakpo’s second goal of the Euros, putting him joint-first with the tournament’s top scorers so far, and if Slot was watching, he’ll no doubt have spotted something crucial.
Gakpo has been one of the Netherlands’ standout performers so far, with the 25-year-old operating from the left of Ronald Koeman’s front three. It’s a position he knows well, having spent most of his time at PSV Eindhoven there, but it’s not one he has occupied too often for Liverpool.
Instead, he has more often been utilized as a center-forward, to mixed results. Following his first performance at Euro 2024, fans called for him to be moved into his more natural position at Anfield – those calls will no doubt grow louder after his latest goal.
Liverpool.com says: It’s clear that Gakpo is much more comfortable on the left rather than through the center, and hopefully Slot will be taking note. He’ll already know all about Gakpo from his time in charge of Feyenoord, and hopefully he’s seen enough to convince him he should return to his favorite position.
Cody Gakpo sent yet another message to new Liverpool boss Arne Slot as he shone again at Euro 2024.
The Reds forward scored his second goal of the tournament as the Netherlands came up against Austria in their final group game. The Dutch were assured of a place in the knockout stages before kick-off, although there was still a question over who would top Group D, with France and Austria in the mix as well.
The Netherlands didn’t make the greatest of starts, with Donyell Malen putting through his own net inside six minutes to put Austria on course to become unlikely group winners, with France struggling to find a breakthrough against Poland.
