- President-elect Donald Trump returned to the White House as the 47th president.
- The day started with a church service at St. John’s Episcopal Church and included tea with Joe and Jill Biden at the White House before Trump shared a ride over to the Capitol with the 46th president.
- The swearing-in ceremony was conducted in the Capitol rotunda, where Trump also delivered his inaugural address, as the D.C. area plunged into extreme cold. It was the first time since Ronald Reagan that the ceremony was not held on the steps of the Capitol in front of a crowd.
- Trump pledged an expansion of U.S. territory and an end to foreign wars in his second inaugural address, promising massive national success while rebuking the outgoing Biden administration.
- Some 240,000 people received tickets to attend inauguration as originally planned Monday. However, Capital One Arena, where supporters could watch the ceremony on a stream, can only hold 20,000 people.
