From tween queen to international chart-topper, Ariana Grande, 21, talks to us about singing for the US president, being neighbours with Miley and her love for Britain
Since gaining her first No. 1 with her no-nonsense single Problem in the summer, US sensation Ariana Grande has duetted with one of our own pop princesses and recently wowed the crowds at the Victoria Secret Fashion show .
We caught up with her to talk about performing, family and famous friends…
You’ve recorded a song with Jessie J and dated Nathan from The Wanted, are you a bit of an Anglophile?
Ha! There’s something about the gloomy weather that’s so enchanting to me, it’s relaxing and romantic. I love London too, I’d like to do some sight-seeing tours while I’m over here, go to some haunted places. I Googled the most haunted places in London and the hotel I’m staying at was in the top three, so I thought, ‘Wow, cool!’
You’re part Italian, how do you stay in tune with that?
I’m very proud, my family has amazing history. It’s great hearing stories of my mum growing up in Brooklyn, then moving to Florida, having me and growing up with this eccentric, fun family. Although I don’t eat a lot of Italian things, because I’m vegan. I was raised on meat and cheese, so I’ve had enough for anyone’s normal life span.
Why did you become vegan?
I love animals more than I love most people, not kidding. But I am a firm believer in eating a full plant-based, whole food diet that can expand your life length and make you an all-round happier person. It is tricky dining out, but I just stick to what I know – veggies, fruit and salad – then when I get home I’ll have something else.

What’s your best memory of working with Jessie J?
I asked if she was nervous to see our [Bang Bang] video and she was like,‘No way, I believe in imperfections.’ I was like, ‘You are the coolest person ever.’ Honestly, it definitely helped me to be a whole lot less worried about those things. I love Jessie.
You’ve performed for President Obama at The White House, how did that go?
My throat dried up. I was right in front of him and I thought, ‘How am I going to get through this?’ I’ve performed Whitney Houston’s I Have Nothing in all the gay bars of New York – that and all those diva anthems – but this was different. I learned a lot. I got a tour and peeked in the Oval Office. But one of the coolest things was seeing the dish sets from every President. They have each one’s framed. It says a lot about each President, what they wanted their dishes to look like. Such a cute thing.
