pope francis latest health update: vatican chief still ‘critical’, kidney issue resolved

Pope Francis is in critical condition and is being treated for double pneumonia, but was permitted to return to work from his hospital bed, according to the latest update from Vatican. Concerns about the pontiff’s renal and lung issues, which have kept him in the hospital for more than a week, persisted.

“The Holy Father’s clinical condition, though critical, shows slight improvement,” the Vatican said in a statement Monday. “In the morning he received the Eucharist, while in the afternoon he resumed work activities. In the evening, he called the pastor of Gaza Parish to express his fatherly closeness,” the statement added.

What We Know About Pope’s Health

Francis was hospitalised on February 14 after experiencing breathing problems and being diagnosed with “double pneumonia,” or pneumonia in both lungs, and experiencing asthma-like symptoms throughout the weekend, raising concerns about his health.

At a Sunday sermon at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan said Francis was “in very, very fragile health and probably close to death,” but he did not explain how he knew that.

Carla Rabezzana, 93, the pope’s cousin and resident of Portacomaro, Italy, told the Italian news agency Ansa, “We are all very worried.” “We hope he gets well soon and gets through this challenging time. I keep up with all the news, and I’m really nervous.”

This marks Francis’s longest hospital stay since his appointment as pontiff in March 2013.
