Cleveland woman’s survival story becomes Lifetime movie: ‘The Girl in the Garage: The Laura Cowan Story’

CLEVELAND — A Cleveland woman’s incredible story of survival is coming to television with the debut of a new Lifetime movie, “The Girl in the Garage: The Laura Cowan Story.

Laura Cowan and her children endured months of captivity, abuse and torture in a California garage in 1989 at the hands of her husband. Now, her story is being shared with audiences nationwide.

Cowan has since become an award-winning speaker, educator and domestic violence activist.

“I worked at CMHA as their domestic violence advocate. I have a weekly radio show on WOVU on domestic violence 101. We talk about everything, even how to obtain a restraining order and judge there; we do a lot of education,” said Cowan.

She hopes the film will bring awareness to the realities of domestic abuse and inspire others to seek help.

“If I survive, you can, too, and there’s a way out. There’s hope out there, you’re not by yourself, you’re not alone and there’s resources out there. I want people to see and just know that domestic violence is real. We have lost so many lives to so many young women, and as I speak right now, somebody’s going through domestic violence,” said Cowan.

“The Girl in the Garage: The Laura Cowan Story” premieres Saturday, Jan. 18, on Lifetime.
