NBA mourns death of SuperSonics legend Gus Williams, key player in 1979 championship
SEATTLE — Gus “The Wizard” Williams, a former Seattle Supersonics player who led the team to its only NBA championship in 1979, has died at age 71.
Williams spent six seasons of his NBA career with the Supersonics.
The shooting guard averaged 17.1 points, 5.6 assists, 2.0 steals and 2.7 rebounds over his career.
In the 1975-76 NBA season, Williams finished second in Rookie of the Year voting to Alvan Adams.
His career began as a draft pick of the Golden State Warriors and concluded after the 1986-87 season with the Atlanta Hawks.
Williams averaged a career best 23.4 ppg with Seattle in the 1981-82 season.
Tributes are pouring in for the former player, remembered for his significant contributions to the Supersonics and the sport.
