The list of new winners of the prestigious American Music Awards (AMA) has just been revealed, with the big surprise being that female singer Ariana Grande surpassed many big names and won the “Artist of the Year” award.
Pop singer Grande, 23, beat heavyweights such as Justin Bieber, Rihanna and Selena Gomez to be voted “Artist of the Year” by fans.
Missing out on the most prestigious title, pop singer Selena Gomez, 24, still won the award for “Best Female Pop/Rock Artist.”
This is her first public appearance since canceling her world tour last August to treat depression.
As expected, 30-year-old black rapper Drake was honored with 3 awards including “Best rap/hip-hop artist,” “Best song” and “Best album” with the music product called “Views.”
Drake leads the nominations this year with 13 awards categories.
Meanwhile, Zayn Malik – former member of the British boy band One Direction, beat Canadian singer Shawn Mendes to win the “Best New Artist” award. Malik left One Direction last year to launch a solo career.
Interspersed with award announcements, the AMA awards night featured an explosive music party featuring a series of famous names such as Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, The Weeknd, Niall Horan, James Bay and John Legend…
Established in 1973, AMA is an annual music award to honor artists with outstanding achievements in the American music industry.
Unlike the Grammy Awards, which are awarded based on votes from members of the Recording Academy, AMA winners are selected based on online votes from fans./.
