Portrait of Ronaldo’s mother

As she enters her twilight years, Dolores Aveiro appears to have achieved everything a normal woman could dream of. However, her life has not been all happiness.

Earlier this month, Dolores shocked the entire Ronaldo family when she suffered a stroke. At 65, Cristiano Ronaldo’s great mother is battling a number of health issues to continue being by the Portuguese superstar’s side.

Dolores’s Rich Life

From the outside, it is easy to see that Dolores lives a life of luxury. She has a filial son who is one of the most talented and richest football players in the world. Ronaldo gave birth to four lovely grandchildren.

Dolores was always proud that Ronaldo always considered himself her little boy. He always took her on long trips on his private jet and bought her expensive gifts.

When Ronaldo moved to Real in 2009, he moved his mother in with him and bought her a £2 million apartment in the centre of Madrid. He spent £4,800 a month on Dolores and her friends flying to Cape Verde for a beach holiday.

Ronaldo once bought his mother a £100,000 car. A few years later, Dolores was pictured with a new car worth £250,000. Next to it were designer items from the world’s top fashion stores.

Old age diseases

Last year, Dolores revealed that she was battling breast cancer. This is not the first time Dolores has had to fight the disease. Previously, in 2007, Ronaldo was very worried when Dolores was diagnosed with cancer in her right breast but was successfully treated.

On the eve of her son’s 34th birthday, while on a flight to Italy to meet Ronaldo, Dolores confirmed: “I had surgery in Madrid, followed by radiotherapy and now I am fighting for my life.”

Everything was fine until Dolores suffered a stroke. Marca and AS said Dolores suffered an ischemic stroke, caused by a blood clot that blocks or obstructs the flow of oxygen to the brain. This type of stroke is more common in older people.

Upon receiving the bad news, Ronaldo immediately returned home to care for his mother. On his personal page, the Portuguese player affirmed: “My mother is stable and recovering well at the hospital. My family and I sincerely thank the doctors who took good care of my mother through her critical condition.”

In 2009, Ronaldo donated £100,000 to the hospital where his mother was first treated for cancer. A friend of Ronaldo revealed: “Cristiano has always been deeply grateful to the doctors and nurses who saved his mother’s life. He knows the suffering that cancer patients’ families go through and wants to do something to share it.”

Great Mother

For Ronaldo, his mother is everything. Without Dolores’s efforts to care for him, there would be no success for Ronaldo today.

Born in 1954 in a fishing village on the Atlantic island of Madeira, Dolores grew up in an orphanage. Her mother died early, her father left her to marry someone else, and she lived a life of hardship, violence, and even cancer. At 18, she married Jose Dinis Aveiro (later Ronaldo’s father). The turning point for the family came when she became pregnant with Ronaldo in 1985.

“He was the child I wanted to get rid of,” Maria Dolores said in her 2014 autobiography, “Mother Courage.” “God didn’t want that to happen, and I felt protected because of that. He didn’t punish me.”

Maria Dolores was a chef in her 30s. The difficult life with her alcoholic husband and low-paying job with the local football team sometimes made her depressed. They had three children by 1984, and when she found out she was pregnant with her fourth, Maria Dolores had many thoughts in her head.

“I went to the doctor to ask for an abortion, but he refused,” Dolores said. After returning home, the mother of three continued to carry out her intention to kill her unborn child by all means, such as drinking beer or exercising like crazy, following advice from neighbors.

Her attempt to abort the baby failed and she finally decided to give birth to Ronaldo, take care of him and help him grow up to be the success he is today.

Since the age of 18, Ronaldo revealed that Dolores has been managing his son’s money. Ronaldo’s choice of girlfriend was also closely monitored by Dolores. In 2008, his ex-girlfriend Nereida Gallardo revealed to the press that “Ronaldo always listens to his mother and Dolores always interferes in his love life.” The Spanish supermodel broke up with Ronaldo for that reason.

Ronaldo’s later girlfriend, Irina Shayk, also fell into a similar situation, when she failed to win Dolores’s affection. It was not until Georgina Rodriguez appeared that Dolores was satisfied.

“The young raise their children, the old look after their grandchildren” – that saying is true for Ronaldo’s mother. In 2010, Ronaldo’s eldest son was welcomed by Dolores herself at a private hospital in Florida, USA. At that time, Dolores was alone, while CR7 was fighting with the Portuguese team at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Similarly, in 2017, she also took care of twins Eva and Mateo. When Georgina later gave birth to her daughter Alana, Dolores also supported her son’s girlfriend a lot.

Dolores devoted her whole life to taking care of her family. Without her silent and noble sacrifices, Ronaldo certainly would not have achieved the success he has today.
