Where will Spider-Man’s fate drift after his third solo movie hits theaters in July 2021? Will Marvel and Sony be at odds with each other again?
In August 2019, Sony and Disney suddenly had a falling out because they could not agree on the terms of cooperation, and as a result, Spider-Man (played by Tom Holland) almost had to leave the MCU. Fortunately, thanks to the indirect intervention of this young actor himself , the two sides calmly sat down to negotiate and decided to let “Little Spider” stay at Marvel Studios for a while longer.
For now, Spider-Man will definitely have a solo movie about the events after Far From Home, expected to start filming in the summer of 2020; and with the clause of an undisclosed movie (most likely Avengers 5). But what happens after that? Will he continue to shoulder the Avengers, or will he leave and return to Sony?
Recently, Sony Pictures President Tom Rothman unexpectedly announced that he hopes to extend the contract with Marvel Studios, allowing Spider-Man to stay in the MCU after the third solo film. Previously, Tom said: ” I think this is a win-win deal for all three parties. Marvel can continue the unfinished story of Spider-Man, Sony also has many opportunities to develop other related characters, and fans will not have to regret when Tom Holland has to leave Marvel Studios anymore .” He also affirmed that the two sides will definitely continue to negotiate after the current contract ends.
If you think about it, at the moment, Spider-Man is playing a very important role for Marvel, Sony and fans as Tom Rothman commented. The ending of Far From Home left a huge question mark about the future of Spider-Man – whose identity was revealed to the public, and also brought a twist about Nick Fury and the Skrull race. Therefore, Spider-Man 3 will be the answer to the above unfinished problems, and perhaps will introduce some other superheroes, who may appear in Avengers 5.
On Sony’s side, they are also nurturing many projects revolving around Spider-Man, starting with Morbius and Venom 2. While Venom 2 is still quite quiet without revealing too much behind-the-scenes information, Morbius contains many easter eggs related to MCU’s Spider-Man. In the trailer that Sony released in mid-January , we can see a Spider-Man poster with the words “murderer”. Not only that, the villain Vulture (Michael Keaton) in the movie Homecoming also suddenly reappeared. Obviously, keeping Spider-Man in the MCU brings many benefits and directions for exploiting the script for Sony, promising a very strong crossover between these two universes in the future, while also helping them attract more fans.
Finally, remember that Tom Holland is currently one of the brightest stars at Marvel Studios, especially after Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans officially left the company. Since appearing in Captain America: Civil War, Tom Holland has quickly won the hearts of fans thanks to his confident performance and humorous and equally profound relationship with Iron Man on the big screen. Therefore, if he had to leave the MCU, or worse, say goodbye to the role of Spider-Man, it would be a truly unacceptable loss.
With the current situation developing in a positive direction, it is likely that Spider-Man will stay in the MCU for a long time to continue bringing the most attractive and thrilling stories to fans. Recently, Marvel also confirmed the temporary title of the third Spider-Man movie is Serenity Now, scheduled to hit theaters on July 21, 2021.
