Report: Liverpool May Step Up Interest In £60m Premier League Target

Liverpool’s Interest in Marc Guehi: What’s Been Said and What It Means

Liverpool have expressed strong interest in signing Marc Guehi, arguably England’s best player at Euro 2024. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the club’s interest, stating that Liverpool have been long-term admirers of the 24-year-old Crystal Palace centre-back. According to Romano, “Liverpool have been scouting the player for a long time. He’s a player they like, for sure.” He also mentioned that while there are no negotiations at present, the end of the Euros might change the situation: “After the Euros, we will see. The appreciation of Liverpool for the player I can confirm to you.”

With the tournament now concluded, Liverpool seem poised to pursue the £60m-rated defender. Guehi’s impressive performances have caught the attention of several Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, who also appreciate his talents. Crystal Palace, however, will be reluctant to let go of one of their star players, especially after losing other key talents.

Looking at the Key Stats

Marc Guehi has been a standout performer for Crystal Palace and England. At 24 years old and standing 1.82 meters tall, he has made significant contributions both at the club and international levels. During the 2023-24 season, Guehi made 29 appearances across all competitions, accumulating over 2,254 minutes of play. His solid defensive skills were on full display at Euro 2024, where he played a pivotal role in England’s journey to the final.

In terms of statistics, Guehi has shown remarkable consistency. He completed 678 touches in the defensive third and had a challenge success rate of 58.3%. His aerial duel success rate, however, stands at a concerning 50%, which might be a point of improvement if he transitions to a team like Liverpool, known for their high defensive line and pressing tactics.

Compare To: Ibrahima Konaté

If Liverpool were to secure Marc Guehi, he would be competing with Ibrahima Konaté to partner with Virgil van Dijk in the heart of the defense. Konaté, who plays for Liverpool, boasts a superior challenge success rate of 75.0% and an aerial duel success rate of 71.3%, significantly higher than Guehi’s 50%.

Konaté’s statistics highlight a more dominant presence in both ground and aerial duels, which is crucial for a team like Liverpool that often faces high balls into their defensive third. Guehi’s performance at Euro 2024, while commendable, still leaves questions about his ability to handle the increased defensive responsibilities and exposure that comes with playing for a top-tier club like Liverpool.

Likelihood and Fee

According to Transfermarkt, Marc Guehi is valued at €38 million, though reports suggest a potential transfer fee could be around £60m. Guehi’s contract with Crystal Palace still has a few years left, but there have been suggestions that he might not sign a new deal with the club, making a transfer more likely if the price is right. Liverpool have been linked with Guehi before, and with their need to reinforce their defence, he could be a viable option.

However, given the financial implications and the player’s current form, Liverpool might also be considering other defensive options. Guehi’s current wages at Crystal Palace are not publicly disclosed, but any move to Liverpool would likely include a significant salary increase, reflective of his increased role and responsibilities at a top Premier League club. Hard to see this one and it feels unlikely Liverpool will go back in after initial enquiries.
