How Liverpool players performed in the Copa America 2024 group stage

Four Liverpool players are representing four different countries at Copa America 2024, and they all contributed to their teams winning ways in the group stage.

In Jurgen Klopp’s final season at Liverpool, the Reds had a frustrating year full of injuries and close loses that saw their manager leave without any silverware beyond the Carabao Cup. Still, Liverpool managed to finish third in the Premier League thanks to their talented squad, including their four South American superstars that traveled to the United States this summer for the Copa America.

Here’s a breakdown of how each Liverpool player performed in the Copa America 2024 group stage.

How Liverpool players performed in the Copa America 2024 group stage

Alexis Mac Allister (Argentina)

Alexis Mac Allister announced his arrival at Copa America 2024 by assisting Argentina’s first goal of the tournament against Canada. Although Lionel Scaloni played several different midfields this summer in the wake of Enzo Fernandez’s recovery from groin surgery, the manager always starts Mac Allister in important, must-win matches.

Mac Allister’s statistics might not be as eye-catching as some of his other Liverpool teammates competing in the United States this summer, but his control and simplicity in the midfield helps Argentina dominate possession and set the tempo of every match. Plus, the midfielder was fully rested in Argentina’s final group stage fixture against Peru in preparation for the quarter-finals.

Darwin Nunez (Uruguay)

Darwin Nunez might have given Luis Suarez the No. 9 shirt back this summer, but he is still Uruguay’s starting striker. Nunez scored 17 goals for Liverpool across all competitions in Jurgen Klopp’s final season with the Reds, and carried his domestic success to his national team at Copa America 2024.

The 25-year-old scored Uruguay’s winner against Panama, as well as La Celeste’s second goal in their 5-0 thrashing of Bolivia. Uruguay’s final group stage match against the USA was the only game Nunez did not find himself on the scoresheet, but his side collected all three points even without his goalscoring.

Uruguay finished first in Group C with three victories in the group stage.

Alisson (Brazil)

Alisson arrived in the United States this summer as the best goalkeeper at Copa America 2024, and the Brazilian has lived up to the hype so far. The keeper played every minute of the Selecao’s three fixtures, and only conceded two goals, one to Paraguay and one to Colombia.

Alisson’s group stage efforts might seem rather unnoteworthy compared to Argentina’s Emiliano Martinez’s three clean sheets, but the Liverpool man stepped up to keep his side from losing any match, especially their final test against Colombia’s prolific attack.

Luis Diaz (Colombia)

Coming off a 12-goal season for LiverpoolLuis Diaz successfully carried over his impressive form to Colombia’s Copa America 2024 campaign. The winger’s only goal might have come from the spot against Costa Rica, but he is often Colombia’s most impactful and creative player on the pitch, along with James Rodriguez.

It is not an exaggeration to say Los Cafeteros would not be on their 26-unbeaten run without Diaz’s playmaking and finishing up top, exploiting defenses to help his side score six goals in the Copa America 2024 group stage alone.

Colombia finished atop Group D, two points ahead of Brazil, the fourth ranked team in the world.
