Portugal’s “sinner” Antonio Silva: Sought after by MU and Liverpool

Antonio Silva made a mistake in Portugal’s 2 goals

In the group stage of EURO 2024 , Antonio Silva had 2 appearances on the field. Specifically, in the 3-0 victory over Türkiye, the 20-year-old player was put on the field to replace veteran Pepe in the 83rd minute but did not leave any significant mark.

In the match against Georgia, because Portugal officially had a ticket to continue, Silva was assigned to start the match by coach Roberto Martinez. In this match, the Benfica midfielder played quite poorly and had to leave the field to make way for Nelson Semedo in the 66th minute.

Right in the 2nd minute of the match, Antonio Silva passed the ball straight to Georges Mikautadze’s position. The 23-year-old striker quickly made a delicate pass for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to enter the penalty area and easily beat goalkeeper Diogo Costa in a face-to-face position, opening the score for Georgia.

In the 55th minute, referee Sandro Scharer consulted VAR about Antonio Silva’s foul in the penalty area on Luka Lochoshvili a few minutes earlier. As a result, the 36-year-old “king in black” pointed to the penalty spot. On the 11m mark, Georges Mikautadze calmly beat goalkeeper Diogo Costa, doubling the gap for Georgia.

With his poor performance, Antonio Silva was given the lowest score of the match by Sofascore (6.2 points). After 2 appearances at EURO 2024, Silva made 1 tackle, won 1 aerial duel and 2.5 successful recoveries, made 1 error leading to a goal and 1 error leading to a penalty for the opponent. At the same time, he also lost the ball 7 times.

Almost certainly, Silva will not have the opportunity to compete for a starting position with Pepe and Ruben Dias in the match against Slovenia in the 1/8 round of EURO 2024 taking place in the early morning of July 2 (Vietnam time).
