To have the most followers on Instagram is to be, in a sense, the most popular kid at school. Sure, there are a whole bunch of other metrics by which to judge fame and success—net worth, number of awards accumulated, magazine covers—but there is something pretty elemental and straight-forward about a celebrity’s Instagram followership: how many people care enough about your life to want to see glimpses of it mixed in with those of their friends, co-workers, and frenemies?

And for now, as of yesterday, the person who is cared about the most is Kim Kardashian. Yes, Kim has just overtaken Beyoncé to become the most followed person on the social-media app (technically, the “Instagram” account has the most followers, with 94.4 million). Kim now has 44.1 million, edging out Beyoncé, who is at 44 million. Taylor Swift, meanwhile, is hot on both of their tails, at 43.7 million. (The top five is rounded out by Selena Gomez—41.9 million—and Ariana Grande—41.8 million.)

Kim often celebrates momentous Instagram occasions by posting some sort of notable shot (surpassing 42 million followers two weeks ago resulted in an especially provocative post), so one can only imagine what sort of plans she has in store to commemorate this feat. And with sister Kylie as the most followed person on Snapchat, Kris Jenner is no doubt feeling pretty good about the state of Kardashian affairs right now (though, actually, knowing her, she’s probably instead focusing on her seven-pronged plot to ensure Kendall becomes the most followed person on Pinterest, or whatever).
