Selena Gomez’s work as a singer, philanthropist, and actress has been recognized globally. Premiered on November 2, 2022, at AFI Fest, My Mind And Me is a raw and vulnerable look into Selena’s life. The documentary was shot over six years, starting from around 2015.

The documentary also provides an unfiltered look and her reflections on her ex-partner, pop star Justin Bieber. Just months after Gomez and Bieber ended their on-off romance, the latter announced his engagement with Hailey Baldwin in 2018.

There has been much speculation about Gomez’s life, especially her relationship with Bieber. The documentary is a representation of Selena’s personal and professional turmoil and finding herself.

Behind the spotlight and a life of fame, often lies the pressure to be perfect as a performing artist. The documentary opens with Gomez crying about not being enough. She worries about disappointing the head of her record label, John Janick. It is also then she brought to attention a potential collaboration with Justin Bieber on a song. She said,

“He (John) called me this morning about the song with Justin, like, when am I just going to be good enough by myself?”

She added,

“When am I just gonna be good enough by myself, not needing anybody to be associated with?”

The Spring Breakers actress does not take Justin’s name through the rest of the film. However, director Alek Keshishian brings to the audience’s notice the press and the public’s need to focus on her relationship.

Selena Gomez was subject to various personal and uncomfortable questions over the years, including the ones about Justin Bieber’s romantic relationships, her mental health, and what led her to get admitted to rehab in 2014.

Selena Gomez shut down rumors with her song, Lose You To Love Me, reportedly written after her breakup with Justin Bieber. In the documentary, Gomez talked about her readiness to speak about her sadness and her song being more than “lost love.” She added,

“It’s me learning to choose myself, to choose life, but also hoping that people can find grace and peace in that too. The song is about knowing that you completely lost every part of who you are just to rediscover yourself again.”

Her relationship with Bieber is just one bit in the documentary, but her self-discovery journey goes much deeper. The Love On singer also highlights her mental health and the aftermath of her lupus diagnosis. At a point in the documentary, Selena Gomez also disclosed that she didn’t want to go to the hospital. However, she added,

“I didn’t want to be trapped in myself, in my mind anymore. I thought my life was over. I thought this is how I’m going to be forever.”

Selena Gomez’s documentary My Mind And Me gives a vulnerable insight into her personal and professional life. As the film progresses, Gomez is seen talking about her pain and slowly prioritizing her mental health and herself. Through the documentary, Gomez wanted her audience to face their fears and embrace healing.
