At the Vanity Fair Oscars 2024 party, attendees like Sydney Sweeney, Margot Robbie, and Jennifer Lawrence cemented the following fashion sentiment: Out with the new, in with the old. Archival looks from the late ’90s and the early ’00s were all the rage at the Vanity Fair Oscars party this year, with a few of our faves committing to some seriously stellar throwback moments.
Sydney Sweeney kicked off the retro trend on the Vanity Fair red carpet in a white gown that was immediately spotted as a tribute to Angelina Jolie. Sweeney and Jolie have many similar parallels when it comes to their media perception, so stepping into a look like that makes total sense.

Jolie originally wore the gown created by designer Marc Bouwer at the 2004 Academy Awards. The ivory dress featured simple ruching at the waist with a deep, plunging neckline and bare back. Sweeney wore a matching white sash and necklace from Messika. The largest difference between the two was hair. While Jolie had her long layers pulled into a half-up, half-down style, Sweeney opted for a voluminous bob, giving a bit of Marilyn Monroe on the beauty side.

Opting for a similar white gown vibe, Jennifer Lawrence arrived at the Vanity Fair Oscars red carpet wearing a white dress from the Givenchy Haute Couture fall 1996 collection. Why is this monumental? Well, this was John Galliano’s final couture collection for Givenchy before he moved over to Dior.

The original design was worn by supermodel Kate Moss on the runway with an ethereal, floral headpiece. JLaw kept her beauty a bit more modern in comparison to Moss’ original runway look, which feels totally on brand for the Hunger Games star. She completed the look with white stilettos from Manolo Blahnik.

It was a big year for 1996 fashion as Barbie star Margot Robbie also arrived on the red carpet for the after party wearing a gold super-cinched corset moment from Mugler’s 1996 runway show, originally worn during Paris Fashion Week by model Chrystele Saint Louis Augustin with a matching headpiece. The look featured iridescent beads hanging at the bottom.

Like Lawrence, Robbie also opted for a modern interpretation of the look, doing away with the headpiece and wearing her hair is tousled waves. She accompanied the statement corset with a brown satin shawl-like cover-up, which meant the stunning lace-up back you can see above was rarely on display, and finished off the look with gold gladiator-style heels, also by Manolo Blahnik, that** **wrapped around her ankles.

It’s so very clear that every entertainment darling loves a good archival moment, and they are, in our books, a necessary addition to make any red carpet that much better. Who will take it to the next level on the next red carpet? We can only wait and see but the Met Gala 2024 is just around the corner…
