Ariana Grande has been a busy woman in the past year, to say the least. The Grammy Award-winning singer has been splitting her time between filming the highly anticipated Wicked movie, the first part of which comes out this November, running a cosmetics empire with her R.E.M. Beauty brand, and recording her upcoming seventh studio album, also due out later this year. The album’s lead single, “Yes, And?” is out today and gives fans a preview of what to expect in her new era.
The forthcoming project marks her first new album in four years—the longest hiatus between LPs of Grande’s career thus far. “Yes, And?” was brought to life by legendary pop producer Max Martin and is sonically resembles the groovy disco beats that have characterized some major pop artists’ music since the turn of the decade.
Lyrically, Grande brushes off criticism she’s received in the past year regarding her personal life and owns her decisions fully. It’s evident from the music video for the track; in an homage to Paula Abdul’s “Cold Hearted” video, the clip involves critics blasting the singer only for them to eat their words when she proves them wrong with a choreographed performance in a warehouse. “Don’t comment on my body, do not reply / Your business is yours and mine is mine / Why do you care so much whose d**k I ride?” she sings on the track, seemingly poking the elephant in the warehouse-sized room.
