Ariana Grande was among 60 people in the audience attending her Wicked costar-turned-boyfriend Ethan Slater‘s opening night performance of his debut residency at Café Carlyle in Manhattan’s Upper East Side neighborhood on Tuesday.
The 30-year-old pop star ‘was not noticed’ wearing a plunging red puff-sleeve dress with her entourage in the back booth ‘until the lights went back on.’
‘Everyone got up to either leave or wait to say hi to Ethan, who was mingling with guests after,’ an eye witness told The US Sun on Wednesday.
‘Ariana and Ethan did not interact after the show was over because he was greeting his fans and it was obvious she did not want to steal the spotlight from him. She was just there to support him.’
A second source told People: ‘She was laughing at all of his jokes in between songs, and cheering for him after each song. The show was mostly about him and his love of music and theater, though he did steal a quick glance over to Ariana when he sang a line about being “Lucky to be in love.” It was very cute.’

The Tony nominee – turning 32 this Sunday – performed songs from Broadway musicals like Fiddler on the Roof, Pippin, and SpongeBob SquarePants as well as Bob Dylan covers.
‘I got to spend a year filming the Wicked movies and it was just the honor of a lifetime to play Boq, and I really wanted to share some of that with you tonight,’ Ethan said before singing the Tin Man’s song, If I Only Had A Heart.
Slater went on to call 2023 a ‘really big year of growth and change’ and he pondered the idea of happiness before singing Happiness from the 1967 musical You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.
‘Think about what it means to feel understood and what happiness means and I think it’s nothing super deep,’ the Spamalot thespian said onstage.
‘I just think that music brings us happiness, community brings us happiness, family brings us happiness – a lot of things brings us happiness. It’s different for everybody. And I hope that you leave tonight and go find yours.’
Ethan called it ‘a wonderful opening night’ on Instagram and he has four more shows through this Saturday at the high-end cabaret lounge, which charges $100-$190 per person.
The inseparable couple fell in love on the London set of Jon M. Chu’s big-screen adaptation of the 2003 Broadway musical sometime between December 9, 2022 and July 13, 2023.
Slater portrays munchkin-turned-tinman Boq and Grande portrays witch Glinda Upland in Wicked, and Universal Pictures is scheduled to release the first part on November 27 followed by the second part on November 26, 2025.
