Miley Cyrus, one of our many patron saints of big hair, has blessed us with yet another larger-than-life—yet somehow, still low-key—hairstyle: the modern-day bouffant blowout.
The “Flowers” singer has been having a beauty renaissance of sorts, pioneering the return of va-va-voluminous hairstyles like disco curls and referencing beauty icons past like Tina Turner, Brigitte Bardot, and even her younger self. Well, the last one may not have been intentional, but Cyrus’s return to her natural shade of brown was very much giving Miley Stewart.
Cyrus has since made the color and length her own in the present day, as proven by new promo photos for the fifth season of Netflix’s My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman.
In the photos, Cyrus is rocking a look that can only be described as the classic sky-high bouffant meets a bouncy ’90s-inspired blowout. She then made the look her own with modern-day face-framing layers and curtain bangs.
Experts say that Cyrus and her hair continue to be right on trend: “Looks from the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s are coming back and providing inspiration for this big-hair trend,” celebrity hairstylist Lacy Redway tells Glamour, pointing to beauty icons like Bardot, Donna Summer, Dolly Parton, Diana Ross, and Cindy Crawford as inspirations.

But the best part of pulling inspiration from history? “There are so many new ways to modernize the look today by using interesting shapes, different products, and even mixing different styles into one,” says Redway.
That’s exactly what Cyrus did: By combining retro volume, modern-day length, and face-framing layers and bangs, one could even say that much like Stewart on Hannah Montana, Cyrus’s bouffant blowout is the best of both (beauty) worlds. And that’s why we anticipate seeing this look everywhere this summer.

To channel your inner Miley Cyrus, Redway suggests prepping hair with volume spray or mousse before you start to heat-style. “This will add extra height and hold to your hair right from the start,” she says. Her suggestions for the job? Nexxus Unbreakable Care Root Lift Thickening Spray and Nexxus Volume Medium Hold Mousse before blow-drying.
Next you’ll want to blow-dry—or use a dry brush like the Shark Flexstyle—with a large round brush, and elevate each section away from the face or where it normally falls. “This will add even more volume to the roots,” Redway says.
