Cardi B rolled deep to the Met Gala on Monday night. The Grammy Award-winning rapper arrived with a massive entourage that included her longtime stylist, Kollin Carter, and at least nine men who helped carry her black gown and straighten its tulle train for photographers. Per WWD, Cardi teamed with Chinese designer Windowsen for a custom gown that was two months in the making and took over the entire landing of the carpet at arrivals, creating a jaw-dropping scene.
This year’s dress code, “The Garden of Time,” takes its cue from the 1962 short story of the same name by J.G. Ballard, which dovetails with the latest Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, which opens to the public on Friday, May 10. The Andrew Bolton-curated show spotlights fragile pieces from the institute’s archives, all viewed through a lens of nature. The exhibit’s coffee table book will be released on June 18.
The Grammy Award-winning rapper and Carter — recently featured on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter’s Top Stylists issue — have been in prep mode for months as she has emerged as one to watch on fashion’s biggest night thanks to head-turning appearances that date back to 2018.
“We’re always thinking ahead,” Cardi told THR in late March during a brief interview inside Sunset Tower, site of a celebration for Hollywood’s top image makers. “I feel like the Met Gala is almost like going to the Grammys. It’s very nerve-racking, and even though we make it look so easy, we really be so nervous.”
Despite those nerves, Cardi explained that they approach the event with the same strategy every year. “We always try to make sure that everything goes right, that everything be iconic. We want everything to be iconic. I know people sometimes be like, ‘Oh, it’s not about who is there and who is not,’ but it’s like, no, you need to remember us forever.”
