The female wildebeest was drinking water at the riverbank in Sabi Sands, South Africa. Neil Goodes, a 60-year-old retired pharmaceutical CEO living in Gold Coast, Australia, said that the thrilling encounter lasted nearly an hour before the crocodile eventually succeeded in seizing its prey. The wildebeest attempted to avoid the crocodile’s attention, which had tightly grasped the animal between its sharp teeth. The wildebeest desired to stay on its feet as the crocodile tried to spin and pull the desperate animal into the water. When describing this astonishing scene, Goodes stated, ‘You hoped the wildebeest would get away, and when the hippo intervened, you thought that could happen.
The unfolding struggle that lasted nearly an hour was disturbing to watch. Apart from the thrashing movements, it was eerily quiet. Sometimes, while on safari from the safety of a jeep, one can forget how precarious life in the wilderness can be. This was a stark reminder of how delicate the balance between life and death truly is.
On a lighter note, during the struggle, I did try to lighten my thoughts by imagining which of my favorite politicians I would substitute for the poor wildebeest.’ The crocodile has a firm grip on the wildebeest’s neck as it drags it into the river and away from the shoreline.

At one stage, it seems the hippo, who appears to have forgotten it is a herbivore, has managed to scare off the crocodile.It was unsettling to watch this struggle unfold over the course of nearly an hour.
